We've started with hedgerow because we feel that this would be far more beneficial than planting tree's.
Not that planting tree's is a bad thing, it's just that the hedgerow is being overlooked and as the loss of a major portion of our native wildlife is being blamed on the loss of the hedgerow , then it makes sense to try and address this.
Hedgerow's have been decimated over the last 60 years, playing a major role in the decline in our small friends which in turn has a huge knock on effect to the rest of our environment.
This has happened for a number of reasons but can be summed up in one, money;
How our countryside should look . |
- The demand for increased productivity leading to intensive practices has lead to them either being removed or killed
- The cost of planting and management in both financial cost and time, is restrictive to the busy country workers who aren't using these practices(there is after all, only 24 hours in a day).
The hedgerow is now being recognised for it's biomass value and an industry is just about to explode onto the market. I'm extremely uncomfortable with the thought of private companies using my direct environment to make private gain from. Capitalism is a good thing, but when in control of my environmental future, it's not.
They only have one reason for being in my community and that is to make money out of it. This will turn into a one sided strategy and will convert our hedgerows(what's left of them) from natural habitats into energy crops with no consideration for the wildlife.
Back to square one, but with private gain being made out of a community resource and us having been sold down the river again.
If we start planting now, then we have a chance of either leading this industry or at the very least, be up there at the front.
The two other main benefits for us planting the hedgerow, are that when it reaches maturity it will create employment in the community at cropping time and the resource collected, will be used to create products(yet more employment) which will in turn generate revenue for the community as well. BUT this will not be at the cost to our primary reason of a natural habitat.

As with everything that Clear Sky Communities does, there has to be balance.
We are talking to a number of national organisations in relation to working with us on this project, as this will not only allow us to gain invaluable insight and support, but will also allow us to train people in rural, endangered professions.
The hedgerows will only be planted on land where we are able to get certain guarantee's to ensure longevity, control over management and full community benefit and so are happy to talk to anyone who feels that they may be able to meet our land requirements.
